Eleven-year-old Robin is a gifted ballet dancer whose demanding teacher thinks has the potential to become professional. Robin resents having to give up her lessons, and is even more displeased when her grandmother finally arrives, and seems to be just a grumpy old woman. Determined to keep up with her ballet, Robin practices dutifully in her garage, but she has outgrown her toe shoes and that, combined with the hard cement of the garage floor, damages her feet. While the rest of Robin's family is aghast at her behavior, only her grandmother, whose feet were bound as a child in China, truly understands Robin's determination to dance, and the two begin to form a true affection for each other.
