 | In Sacred Loneliness by Todd Compton Beginning in the 1830s, at least thirty-three women married Joseph Smith. These were passionate relationships which had some longevity, except in instances in which Smith`s first wife, Emma, learned of the secret union and quashed it. Emma remained a steadfast opponent of polygamy throughout her life. One-third of Smith`s wives were young women between fourteen and twenty years of age. Another third were married to other men, some of whom served as witnesses at their own wives` polyandrous weddings. Some women hinted that they bore Smith children -- notably Sylvia Sessions, whose daughter Josephine was named after her alleged father -- the children presumably having carried their stepfathers` surnames. For all of Smith`s wives, the experience of being secretly married to the prophet was socially isolating and emotionally draining. Despite some benefits, they found their faith tested. After Smith`s death in 1844, one of the widows joined a convent. The majority were appropriated by the prophet`s successors in church leadership and had children by them, though the women considered these guardianships largely unsatisfying. Others stayed in the Midwest and remarried, while one moved to California. All considered their lives unhappy, except for the joy they found in their offspring. | Evangelism Divided by Ian Murray Murray analyses major changes in the evangelical movement in the years 1950 to 2000, clarifying the issues raised & assessing events in the light of biblical teaching. The period under review saw the fundamental difference between two contrasting approaches to Christian unity, ecumenism & evangelicalism, gradually obscured. In their desire to distance themselves from the older fundamentalism, some evangelical leaders were too willing, in Murray's view, to jettison, or at least to tone down, previously cherished convictions concerning the nature of Christian conversion, the authority of Scripture & the primacy of gospel truth over denominational loyalty. Leaders whose roles in these changes are discussed include Billy Graham, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, J. I. Packer & John R. W. Scott. Particular attention is given to the evangelical movement within the Anglican communion, the problematic nature of evangelical involvement in the world of scholarship & moves to break down barriers between evangelicalism & Roman Catholicism. Murray emphasizes the basic question, What is a Christian? & its implications for evangelical faith & life.
