 | Ada by Vladimir Nabokov This memoir of a lifetime of incest is written from the point of view of a doctor named Van Demonovitch Veen, with commentary by his sister/lover Ada and edited by Ronald Oranger (an anagram of the book's title). Its two main characters were admittedly loathed by their creator. Nabokov called it his most cosmopolitan and poetic novel. It is definitely his longest and most complex, incorporating nothing less than the entire history of European literature and art, puns and jokes in five languages, and a good deal of erudite lepidoptery. It is structured so that each of the five parts is exactly half the length of the preceding one: a device that reflects the novel's meditations on the nature of time. Besides being the name of one of the main characters and a pun on the English word ardor, the word Ada means oh yes or of hell in Russian.
