 | Northwest Coast Indian Painting by Edward Malin Captivated by the dynamic and evocative art of the Pacific Coast tribes, while on a search experiment to Alaska in 1949, Ed Malin initially compiled the books on totem poles and masks described on page 12. This book completes his survey with an exploration of the house paintings of Northwest Coast tribes, including the Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Kwakiutl, Bella Coola, Coast Salish, and Nuu chaa nulth. Exterior paintings were as large or larger than the front wall of a cedar long house, from 10 to 50 feet in length and with heights to 20 feet. These and smaller but equally stunning interior murals presented family status and ancestral credentials to the village world. Although the paintings demonstrate a mature and sophisticated form, comparable to Toltec and Mayan murals, they survive today only in the fading memories of a handful of tribal elders, in rare and often unexhibited museum holdings, and in period photos made by European and North American explorers. Ed Malin`s book is a rich historical survey that offers readers the rare gift of seeing this vanished art. | Improving Student Achievement by Ann Flanagan, David Grissmer, Jennifer Kawata, Stephanie Williamson Why do students have different achievement levels across states? Is math achievement improving across states? Differences in average achievement levels across states are mainly traceable to differing family characteristics. However, students from similar families also score differently across states. These differences are related to differences in resource levels and in how resources are spent. States with high spending per pupil, lower pupil-teacher ratios, higher participation in public prekindergarten and higher reported teacher resources have higher achievement. Disadvantaged children are the most sensitive to low resource, and additional resources could substantially their scores. Between-state, rather than within-state, differences in resources appear to be the main reason for inequitable resource levels for students of lower socioeconomic status. The conclusion is that significant math gains are occurring across most states that cannot be traced to resource changes, that the rate of gain varies significantly by state, and that reform efforts are the likely cause of these gains. The results certainly challenge the traditional view of public education as unreformable.
