 | River Pilot by William V. Reynolds This is a historical, fictional account of incidents that occurred in South Central Georgia on the Altamaha River. The time period is the early 20th century--1908 to 1920. Romance & adventure are set against the backdrop of the timber industry. Timber owners were still shipping their timber down river in rafts. In order to get their products to market, they hired men known as river pilots or raft pilots. These men navigated the river & delivered raw timber to sawmills downstream. These men, ordinary farmers, faced natural hazards on the river as well as man-made ones. Steamboats still worked their way up & down the Altamaha & Ocumulgee from Darien to points up river as far as Macon. Baxley, Hazelhurst, Jesup, Lumber City & other communities near the river still depended on river commerce even though the railroads had been available for a quarter of a century. The nationalizing of the railroads during World War I had a definite impact on the local people. A United States military presence caused problems for some communities. This book should appeal to teenagers & adults who are interested in this era. AUTHOR: William V. Reynolds PUBLISHER: Double Eagle Enterprises FORMAT: Paperback CATEGORY: General
