 | Desertion During the Civil War by John Beatty, William Blair Desertion during the Civil War, originally published in 1928, remains the only book-length treatment of its subject. Ella Lonn examines the causes and consequences of desertion from both the Northern and Southern armies. Drawing on official war records, she notes that one in seven enlisted Union soldiers and one in nine Confederate soldiers deserted. Lonn discusses many reasons for desertion common to both armies, among them lack of such necessities as food, clothing, and equipment; weariness and discouragement; noncommitment and resentment of coercion; and worry about loved ones at home. Some Confederate deserters turned outlaw, joining ruffian bands in the South. Peculiar to the North was the evil of bounty-jumping. Captured deserters generally were not shot or hanged because manpower was so precious. Moving beyond means of dealing with absconders, Lonn considers the effects of their action. Absenteeism from the ranks cost the North victories and prolonged the war even as the South was increasingly hurt by defections. This book makes vivid a human phenomenon produced by a tragic time. | The House by the Sea by Rebecca C. Fromer In the years before the second world war the city of Salonika in Greece was a center of Sephardic life and culture. Greek Jews were occupied in seamanship, exports and imports, wineries, weaving, law, medicine, scholarship, and more. They were grocers, tailors, bookkeepers, salesmen, and laborers. But during the war, when Greece was occupied first by Italy and then by Germany, its Jewish population was systematically exterminated. Almost ninety percent of the population was killed, mostly in Nazi concentration camps, making it the most devastated of all the Jewish communities of Europe. One who survived was Elias Aelion, whose story here is told. So complete was the genocide that few Jewish voices remained to speak of the terrible loss, and as a result the Holocaust in Greece has remained unknown to most people. Now Rebecca Fromer, a leading authority on the subject, tells the vivid story of Elias's experiences, and through them the larger story of the tragedy of the Greek Holocaust. Elias was a Jew from Salonika, a sergeant in the Greek forces defeated by Germans at the battle of Klisura. He survived by escaping to Athens and finding refuge there. Against the horror of the Holocaust, The House by the Sea recalls his childhood in a house in Salonika that was filled with people and laughter . It was a happy time now lost forever: ninety-six percent of the Jews in Salonika perished, including all of Elias's family. His story is the story of lost innocence, rich with details and poignant with feeling. It is the story of an entire people cruelly destroyed, a story that must be heard so that it may never again be forgotten. AUTHOR: Rebecca C.
