| | Corba for Real Programmers by Reaz Hoque CORBA stands for Common Object Request Broker Architecture and is at the center of software development for building distributed applications. Distributed applications are designed to run over a network regardless of the type of computer one uses to access the network and the application. This is the holy grail of applications development, the write once-run anywhere challenge is a major focus of contemporary software engineering theory, practice, and application. CORBA enables a software developer to create software applications in piece by piece fashion -- software components. These software components are then stored and called when needed for a program to run. With this type of architecture a software engineer can create a basic program and store it in pieces so that when a Macintosh user accesses the program, the Macintosh version will run while the Windows 98 user will run the Windows 98 version. The core software may remain the same with different pieces designed to support the different operating systems. The CORBA standard is defined and managed by the Object Management Group (OMG), an industry-wide consortium which develops standards for object-oriented programming and applications. CORBA is the premiere software development project of the OMG. There are proprietary approaches to object request broker architectures, DCOM from Microsoft is one example, however, these are generally platform specific and a subset of the broader CORBA definition. CORBA is a core technology for today's computing professional. AUTHOR: Reaz Hoque FORMAT: Audio & Paperback CATEGORY: Computers & Internet
