In a stretch, if pigeonholing is your thing, Burden of Ashes, the fourth book by acclaimed poet and performer Justin Chin could be called a memoir. But categorization is something Chin rather studiously avoids, as Burden of Ashes aggressively demonstrates. A series of interconnected essays using actual events in his life serve as a springboard for his imagination, as Chin creates a literary dreamscape in which the landscapes of childhood, homelands, bodies, lovers, and desires succumb to whimsy, revision, and denial. In one way, you could even call that the crux of Chin's work. He sneaks up on you with essays entitled Tom Selleck Battles the Manila Assembly of Lucifer which upon reading turns out to be an exploration of the role ghosts play in our every day lives, but with a title like that you can't turn the pages fast enough to get to it. Don't even bother trying to figure out what is real and what is imagined-you would only frustrate yourself and miss the best parts. Allow yourself the luxury of floating here, wrapped in language and memory, in a place where killing snakes, stern discipline, family pets, and childhood vacations share equal time with unrequited love, the mournful specters of ex-lovers, imagined passions, and the enigmatic power of a good kiss.
