Diary of Samuel Repys by Henry B. Wheatley, Mynors Bright, Samuel Pepys

Diary of Samuel Repys by Henry B. Wheatley, Mynors Bright, Samuel Pepys
Pepys's accounts of life in Restoration London offer a fascinating view of the society and culture of that period. He witnessed some of the most significant events of his time, including the return of Charles II in 1660, the Great Plague in 1665, the Fire of London in 1666, and the burning of the English fleet by the Dutch in 1667. Although all these events are described in the diary, much of what Pepys recorded were accounts of his flirtations, visits to the theatre, and dining pleasures. It is in these entires that we get a vivid picture of middle class life in Restoration London. Pepys's frank opinions and gratitude to God for his material gains are often amusing to the modern reader, but despite his hedonism and materialism, he was a capable administrator in the Royal Navy, and he helped to sow the seeds for the rise of British sea power in the eighteenth century.

Life & Times of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass

Life & Times of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
This is the first paperback facsimile edition of a work which contributed strongly to the Black people's struggle for freedom and equality. Born in slavery in Maryland in 1817, Frederick Douglass escaped from servitude twenty years later, joined the ranks of the Abolitionists and devoted a long and fruitful life to the winning of freedom for his people. Douglass worked with William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips and John Brown, and during the Civil War was so highly regarded by Abraham Lincoln for his contributions to the Union cause that the Great Emancipator called him the most meritorious person I have ever seen. A fervent integrationist, Douglass was the first of the freedom riders and sit-ins . He felt that true freedom could not come for him until all Blacks were free and equal, and he gave voice and direction to the movement to achieve this goal. Told in Frederick Douglass's own words, this volume is an important work of Americana.
