This biography--a combination of material collected from the Soviet archives, Sergei Eisenstein`s fragmentary memoirs, and the author`s insights--illuminates Eisenstein`s background. Detailing his childhood, the author points out that Eisenstein`s negative depictions of bourgeois characters can be traced back to his poor relationship with his neglectful father, and implies that his creative talents were nurtured by his eccentric mother. In addition to citing Eisenstein`s first sources of inspiration, the author describes how the young Eisenstein, as a Russian Jew who spoke German better than he did Russian, tended to deviate from Soviet society.
