Clyfford Still began challenging the prevailing idea of what a painting is, with his first solo show in New York in 1945. By 1952, he had ceased to exhibit his work publicly, and on his death in 1980, his home in Maryland was found to contain nearly 300 paintings. The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, however, mounted an exhibition of his paintings in 2001, and this volume is the catalog from that show, presenting 30 paintings, with essays by art scholar Brooks Adams, Neal Benezra of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Still expert David Anfam.
