 | Chinese Calligraphy by Chiang Yee This is the classic introduction to Chinese calligraphy. In nine richly illustrated chapters Mr. Chiang explores the aesthetics and the technique of this art in which rhythm, line, and structure are perfectly embodied. He measures the slow change from pictograph to stroke to the style and shape of written characters by the great calligraphers. It is a superb appreciation of beauty in the movement of strokes and in the patterns of structure--and an inspiration to amateurs as well as professionals interested in the decorative arts. | Irresistible Decay Incendiary Art uses the collections of the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities - prints, drawings, illustrated books, manuscripts, and other objects - to investigate the vibrant imagery produced in an unprecedented flourishing of representations of fireworks and fireworks spectacles in Europe from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. Concentrating more on the records of these events than the events themselves, Incendiary Art examines these images as vehicles of meaning within the larger context of European culture and politics, without losing sight of their status as artifacts with an independent aesthetic life. Incendiary Art examines pyrotechnics within categories ranging from the theory of the sublime, to politics, poetics, erotics, aesthetics, and volcano lust. CATEGORY: Art & Architecture

 | Clyfford Still by Brooks Adams, David Anfam, James T. Demetrion Clyfford Still began challenging the prevailing idea of what a painting is, with his first solo show in New York in 1945. By 1952, he had ceased to exhibit his work publicly, and on his death in 1980, his home in Maryland was found to contain nearly 300 paintings. The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, however, mounted an exhibition of his paintings in 2001, and this volume is the catalog from that show, presenting 30 paintings, with essays by art scholar Brooks Adams, Neal Benezra of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Still expert David Anfam.
