 | Saving Private Ryan by David James, Steven Spielberg Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Edward Burns, and Tom Sizemore, Saving Private Ryan, a co-production of DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures, is a story of heroism and sacrifice set in France during and just after the D-Day invasion of World War II. Opening with the actual storming of the beach and continuing behind enemy lines, a squad of U.S. army soldiers put their lives in perilous danger to find one paratrooper. Private Ryan, played by Matt Damon, is the sole survivor of four brothers -- the other three having been killed during the invasion. Comprehending the tremendous sacrifice already made by this one mother, Washington issues an order to bring back her last surviving son... alive. As the squad, led by Tom Hanks, pushes deep into enemy territory, they find themselves questioning their mission: Is one man worth risking the lives of eight? With exquisite detail, the movie recreates the havoc and mayhem that was the storming of Normandy beach and all the action and realism is captured in these astounding photographs. In a large format, similar in size to the visual moviebooks on Evita and Titanic, Saving Private Ryan is presented in three parts: Part I: The Men. Stunning photos capture Spielberg's recreation of the action at Normandy beach, and are shown alongside the historical photos which inspired him. Text is drawn from the words of Churchill, Eisenhower, Bradley, from the letters of real soldiers, historical documents, manuals and maps as well as from the works of the acclaimed historian, Stephen Ambrose, who also served as consultant on the movie. Part II. The Mission. James' powerful studies of the squad of eight soldiers, led byTom Hanks, as they try and fulfill their mission arc accented by extracts drawn from the screenplay. Part III. The Movie. Behind-the-scenes photos of the film-makers at work -- in England at boot camp, on the beaches of Ireland -- are combined with interviews with Spielberg, actors Hanks, Burns, Si AUTHOR: David James, Steven Spielberg PUBLISHER: Newmarket Press FORMAT: Hardcover CATEGORY: Art & Architecture

 | Irving Gill & the Architecture of Reform by Thomas S. Hines In the first definitive study of Gill's work, architectural historian Thomas Hines traces the architect's journey from his native Syracuse to apprenticeship with Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago to the development of his career in Southern California. Hines places the work in an international context, comparing and contrasting it with the work of Loos and other early modern architects. Among the topics explored are the use of concrete (which greatly influenced Wright and Rudolph Schindler) and his application of Mission Revival ornamentation to his pure forms. The buildings shown (illustrated with a great number of archival photographs, as well as with new color images) include the Lewis Courts, Sierra Madre; the Dodge House, Hollywood; and Horatio West Court, Santa Monica. Hines's pioneering study also explores the creative tensions between the imperatives and possibilities of modernism and regionalism in the American Progressive era of the early 20th century.
